The late-afternoon light streamed through the windows of the family home, painting the room in a warm, honeyed glow. Maria stretched, the muscles in her back loosening with the gentle movement. She was immersed in the task of going through her grandmother’s things, an activity that felt more like a pleasant meditation than a chore.

She held a faded photograph in her hands. The family had always portrayed her grandmother as a strong, independent woman who had overcome hardship. This picture, however, depicted a young woman, her face filled with a vulnerability she'd never shown her family, smiling at a man who wasn't her grandfather. A quiet understanding dawned on her.
